威廉·巴特勒·叶芝（亦译叶慈、耶茨）爱尔兰诗人、剧作家
本诗作于1886年，是叶芝早期的名篇，以一个仙女（或精灵）的口吻，呼唤一个人间的孩子，随他一起到满是精灵的仙岛。仙女描述着仙岛的美丽与无忧无虑，还指出：你们的世界充满了烦恼，即使在睡梦中也无法摆脱无尽的烦恼。
在每一段的末尾，不断的以童谣似的迭句呼唤，让人间的孩子离开他所属于的那个“哭声”太多的现实世界。
在诗的末段，孩子终于牵上精灵的手，和精灵一起离去了。但是离开时，他的眼神却是庄重的。他终于逃离了现实，去往仙岛，而代价是放弃了人间一些小小的，朴素的快乐。
现实世界充斥着我们所无法了解的哭声，因而我们向往仙岛，向往“在魔桶里藏进了满满的浆果”的迷人岁月。
没有人能够拿出确凿的证据，证明仙岛和精灵都是虚幻不实的。有很多人曾经亲眼见过天使或者仙女---他们只是绝口不提而已，但是他们甜蜜的笑容却泄露了这个秘密......
叶芝一生都是神秘主义者，他一直对爱尔兰异教的传奇着迷，诗中提到的地方分别是Leitrim和Sligo，都是叶芝童年时代深深眷恋的地方。这首诗在艺术上深受浪漫主义和前拉斐尔派的影响，充满梦幻情调。萧伯纳曾说：“爱尔兰一无所有，除了想象。”
